Sarah Vance was born and raised on a family dairy farm in the southwest of England. With lifelong interests in science, art, farming and self-sufficiency, she has combined a formal education (BA Oxford University 1990; PhD Cornell University 1996) with daily farm life (i.e. milking cows) and numerous forays into ceramics, sculpture and fiber arts (particularly knitting and wool work which she began at the age of five).
Since moving to a homestead on the Cumberland Plateau in 1996, Sarah has combined these eclectic interests into formulating recipes for old fashioned lye soaps made with milk from her dairy goats and other organic ingredients. The soaps are hand-molded/ hand-carved and sold either individually or combined with hand-knitted washcloths and hand-knitted soap mats. She is currently knitting bathroom wall hangings that hold and display a selection of hand-carved soaps.
